How Does Hail Form?

Hail Damage Claim Experts

Throughout the hail season this year, we have seen numerous reports of hail throughout the US. As many have experienced, hail can be one of the most damage components of a thunderstorm leaving houses and cars devastated with damage. How does hail form? Why do some parts of the US get more hail than others.

The Formation of Hail

Hail forms when tiny pieces of ice, are kept in the air by strong updrafts, get blown through freezing thunderclouds until they are heavy enough to fall to earth. Most large thunderstorms create some hail, but the proper conditions must be present for the hailstones to grow large, freeze solid and then survive until they reach the ground.

Think of a hail stones like multiple layers of ice. The larger the hail stone the more layers will be found. If the thunderstorm is cold and windy enough, this ice pieces will accumulate layers of ice the way a dipped candle accumulates layers of wax. The hailstone is tossed upward and downward allowing it to accumulate more layers especially if the updraft is stronger.
