| Soot, (Product of Incomplete Combustion) typically carries a PH factor of 4.1 which is mildly to moderately acidic, which combined with the excess moisture to douse the fire, has a very corrosive effect on metals and electronics. TV’s, computers and other electronics may work well for several months before the gremlins come out. Soot is also classified by its sources, Natural, (wood & paper) Synthetic, (plastics, vinyl and most carpeting) and Enzyme (burnt plants or meats) and have differing methods of remediation.
When excessive heat is present within a structure, gases and soot are forced into ceiling and wall cavities by the heat generated pressure. Deodorizers may not be effective to counteract as no pressure exists to reach the sedimentation in these cavities. Removal of the walls and ceiling, cleaning and encapsulation of the cavities may be the proper protocol. Many homeowners have complained of a “smoky smell” with weather changes possibly due to barometric changes which force gases out of these cavities and back into the structure.
An insurer may elect to clean clothing, furniture and other contents in an “attempt” to salvage and reduce the costs of the claim. Please contact us now so we can catalog your items as soon as possible.
